KCBS Transmitter

On the next few pages, we will be presenting some historical photos of the KCBS transmitter site. These photos were taken in 1950 during the construction of the building and towers. They were scanned from the original 10x8 black and white prints that were stored at the transmitter. Some of the photos have the dates on the back and I will include these whenever possible. As to what is going on in some of them, I can only take a guess at it. If you were there, please contact me, we gotta talk. The pictures are sequential and there are 14 of them.
First up, is a great photo that was taken at the General Electric plant and shows the BT25A undergoing testing before shipping. Underneath the platform on the right side you can see part of the air handling duct work for the transmitter. All cooling air was brought in from the bottom of the transmitter (in fact the ducts are still in place under the building today). It also looks like the heavy iron (modulation transformers, HV transformers) is contained in cages behind the transmitter. In this photo the transmitter does not appear to be powered up, so I guess those two lamps on top are not really being used as dummy loads.
