KCBS Transmitter

This is the front of our main transmitter. The transmitter is a model DX-50, built by Harris Corporation of Quincy, Illinois. It is completely solid state, there are no tubes used in it. Instead of one or two big tubes to make 50,000 watts, it uses 128 transistorized (mosfet) amplifier modules each capable of a putting out about 1000 watts. Digital technology is used to turn these 128 amplifiers in the correct order to create the AM signal. Because this transmitter has no transformers in the audio chain, the audio quality is far superior to other types of AM transmitters. The black panel on the left has two knobs for tuning the transmitter. The black panel in the middle has meters for monitoring transmitter functions and controls for on/off and output power control. The panel on the right has a diagnostic panel for various transmitter functions.
