Welcome to the Alice@97.3 portion of out tour. Alice is a 82,000 watt contemporary music station on 97.3mHz, hence the name. The actual call-letters are KLLC.

Way back when, Alice was known as KCBS FM and the frequency was 98.9 mHz. In 1976 a frequency trade was worked out that allowed KCBS FM to change frequency and get more power. Three radio stations were involved. They were, KMPX at 106.9 mHz (the original San Francisco hippie rock station where Tom Donahue started the free form format), KEAR at 97.3 mHz, and KCBS FM at 98.9 mHz. KCBS FM got 97.3 and 82,000 watts (the old KEAR frequency), KEAR got 106.9 and 80,000 watts and KMPX, who was being sold by the Crosby family, got 98.9 and 9000 watts.

KCBS FM went through several incarnations of rock radio but never really made a dent in the ratings until they changed the call letters to KRQR and became the "Rocker". KRQR was a album oriented rock station and did quite well in the market for many years. Around 1994 the direction of the station became a little confused and in 1996 the "Rocker" went away and Alice@97.3 was born. Alice's fresh mix of new music was a big hit and the station was again well placed in the ratings.

From an engineering point of view, it is fun having two stations that are at opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum. One side, KCBS, has all news and we in engineering get to do fun things like World Series, football, elections and other news stories and on the other side at Alice we have classic remote broadcasts from stores or maybe broadcast from concerts or fairs or whatever. The diversity helps make the job a lot more fun.

Anyway, you're here to see the studios, transmitter and the folks who keep you entertained, so, go ahead and select your choice below.
